I have had issues with screen flickering and the screen suddenly turning black before and this is the second time it hard resetted (the first time was a while ago but my PC was able to successfully boot back up). This time, and every time thereafter, my PC makes it to the Windows 10 loading screen before it suddenly stops loading, blacks out, and restarts. After three restarts it goes into a diagnostics mode which is unable to resolve the issue but logs the issue under Windows/System32/LogFiles/Srt. The log file suggests i: boot resources custom bootres.dll is corrupted. After Googling and performing troubleshooting, system restore, startup restore, and all the other troubleshooting options to no avail, I arrived at which provided a solution involving bcdboot C: windows /s V.

I started with a Radeon video card. It had many crashes. I blamed it on the lack of updated video driver (AMD abandoned the old cards) and switched to nVidia. I did not go back to test this with Radeon card.
I've checked MSI website many times and it never showed an update. It turns out that you have to install MSI Live Update. It showed available update and I installed it • System fails to start after BIOS update. Had to pin-reset and it rebooted fine.

Find the link to the Microsoft website. Download the tool and run it, and it will give you the option to copy the install media to a USB or create an ISO to burn a DVD. Hey Imaneke, Sorry for the late reply, I had a busy day today, and have only now found time to get back on and post. Firstly, thanks for the help and advice, I Pulled an older hard drive (which happened to be a Seagate 750gb mechanical hdd) out of my older desktop after i did a clean install on it. Got it installed into my newer desktop with the bad hard drive and got it to boot.
When you have both hard drives connected, you will need to immediately go into your motherboard bios and set the Seagate 750 GB drive as the primary boot device. Your motherboard documentation should tell you how to change the boot options. I used to have a 990FXA Gaming MSI board before, but that board has the UEFI Bios. Not sure what your micro atx board has. When you boot from the Seagate, it will show the other hard disk in My computer or This PC, depending on what version of Windows is on it.

Things have been up for about two hours, which is a triumph. I would NEVER have thought to change that. • Found another article in Microsoft about disabling the PCI Link State Power Management under Advanced Power Settings and did that for good measure. Because of the hard freeze, I had NO events in the logs beyond 'Hey, you powered off your system without a shutdown'.
I am throughly baffled what could be causing this, is it a hardware fault? Is it a software fault? A Google search suggested that the bootrec.dll being corrupted error was the cause of a recent Windows update. Still it's strange I wasn't able to boot into Ubuntu but I was able to boot into my bootkit.
