The only main thing which give lighters a little weight is the gas which is inside and apparently you lighter would have either run out or would have almost run out. Gold lighters are usually made such that the components inside cant be removed from their gold casing unless the gold is being melted off. But basically the entire components which make up a lighter are are mostly made of gold so out of the total weight the part which is not made of gold is basically about 10 grammes or less. So when you weigh the lighter just subtract 10 grammes from your total and that is the weight of your gold.

A Cartier lighter, yellow gold plated, marked to lighter and box Cartier, designed as a slender rectangular shaped lighter of rounded form, finished on a cross hatched brushed gold finish. Depending on their size and metal, a Cartier Love Bracelet should weigh between 30 and 38 grams (roughly the equivalent of five to six US quarter coins). Fake bracelets oftentimes are comparatively much lighter than authentic Love Bracelets.

In 1847, Louis-Francois Cartier took over the jewelry shop in Paris where he had been an apprentice to Adophe Picard. The Cartier brand slowly began to gain notice and in 1856, Princess Mathilde (a cousin to Napoleon) made her first purchase from the Cartier store. Cartier released the first jewelry watch in a bracelet style for women in 1888. Since that time, Cartier watches have remained a popular luxury item for both men and women. There are a few ways to identify the model of a Cartier watch.

Once you know the model, research again. Is your particular model still being manufactured? What does it sell for on average in the pre-owned market?

Thanks for any help. I bought the watch for my wife. It's a limited edition 2000 santos galbe with a grey dial. I'm fortunate enough to work about 30 min away (by car) from the Cartier boutique in Beverly Hills. The watch came with no papers, no box.

This documentary heritage has lasted through the ages, a record of virtually every piece that Cartier has created since the turn of the century. In addition, an important collection of registers dating back to the nineteenth century retraces Cartier’s activity at its premises on boulevard des Italiens. Even the Second Empire, a significant era in Cartier’s history, has left its trace. These written records are combined with a rich collection of photographs, as each item of jewellery was photographed, life-size, before leaving the workshops.

Cartier's archives are a methodical and accurate record of production, classified in accordance with a seamless yet rigorous system. They also bear witness to everyday life at a jewellery company. Each item of jewellery has its pedigree, from the initial sketches to its manufacture in the jewellery workshops to the moment of its sale. Cartier has occupied the same premises on rue de la Paix since 1899, on the very site chosen by Alfred Cartier and his son Louis who had recently joined the firm. Hold the watch by the case. A perfect bracelet will be perpendicular to the ground. The more the bracelet bends towards ground the worse the bracelet.

An authentic Cartier watch can often be identified by the excellence of the logo. The logo appears on the back of the watch as well as on the face. Sometimes a Cartier dial has the name 'Cartier' hidden on it. Fake dials are usually fairly easy to pick out. Compare the Cartier logo and script on a watch to authentic copies to help identify a real watch.

Hello, My first post on the Cartier forum. The background: I just put down a deposit on two watches, estate pieces, at a local estate jeweler in my town. The jeweler is reputable, but he's not an authorized watch dealer. The two watches are a Rolex Explorer I and a Cartier Santos Galbee Automatic (no date) with a grey dial, metal bracelet. The Rolex is for me and the Cartier is for my wife. While it is listed as a Male gender watch, to me it's more unisex, and I think she would like it.

An unsealed deed granted by a sovereign, authorising its holder to sell his wares at the royal court. A warrant was also granted and still is in countries with a monarchy - a means of informing the public, with the sovereign’s permission, that a supplier worked for a royal court. Cartier was granted warrants by the following monarchies: Great Britain and Spain (1904), Portugal (1905), Russia (1907), Siam (1908), Greece (1909), Serbia (1913), France (the Comte de Paris, 1914), Belgium (1919), Italy (1920), Romania (1925), Egypt (1929) and Albania (1939).

Early lighters were powered by naphtha, a petroleum mixture, and these are more desirable than the butane gas lighters, that were introduced in the late 1940s. Lighters made from precious materials, often by jewelers, or those in novelty shapes such as aeroplanes and animals are popular.

P.S, love the quotes and the end. Well I didn't mean so suggest that the engraved letters are fake, but this lighter is missing so many of the required elements of an authentic old model that for me to say it's genuine.well I just can't get there. I used to collect lighters, Dunhill, Dupont, ect., & while I'm no expert on Cartier, after seeing the one with the watch embedded in it, yours looks problematic at best. Take it to the jeweler.have him test it for gold content. & if you could provide a photo of the top opened up to show the flint wheel and mechanism.that would be appreciated.

Camera flash arm. In turn, an immediate giveaway is the weight of the bracelet. Depending on their size and metal, a Cartier Love Bracelet should weigh between 30 and 38 grams (roughly the equivalent of five to six US quarter coins). 'all original versus 'authentic'. A watch can be authentic without being all original. Unless someone has owned the watch since it was new and it has never left their sight it is impossible for them to state the watch is 'all original' as a part could have been replaced at some point in time -- even without their knowledge.

Indeed this is a good indicator, but not the best indicator as there were many Cartier watches produced prior to the technology required to make the micro-script possible and not all Cartier watches have Roman numerals for the dial to have the micro-script signature. Furthermore, the micro-script is not always located at the same place and if the dial has been refinished it may not appear at all. Another common problem is actually caused by language differences, i.e. 'all original versus 'authentic'. A watch can be authentic without being all original. Unless someone has owned the watch since it was new and it has never left their sight it is impossible for them to state the watch is 'all original' as a part could have been replaced at some point in time -- even without their knowledge. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable seller even if you have to pay slightly more money.
